EXPLORING DEVONPORT WITH YOUR HIRE CAR

Home to the Spirit of Tasmania terminal, many travellers see Devonport as a transit hub rather than a destination. But there are a handful of sites to see around town and plenty more further afield.

1.      Mersey Bluff Lighthouse

Located on the city’s northern tip, this iconic red-and-white lighthouse makes for a classic Devonport photo opp. A string of walking trails winds around the surrounding peninsula to afford sweeping coastal views.

2.      Bass Strait Maritime Centre

Seafarers and maritime types will adore this nautical-themed museum, which hosts a varied selection of maps, artefacts, and navigational gadgets. Give the computerised sailing simulator a whirl to see how you’d fare on the seven seas.

3.      Penguin Viewing Platform

A hop and a skip from town, this purpose-built penguin viewing platform is a top spot to watch cute flightless birds waddle in from the sea. Rock up just before sunset to gawk at the daily spectacle.

EXPLORING OUTSIDE DEVONPORT WITH YOUR CARE RENTAL

A plethora of picturesque places lie within easy driving distance of Devonport. So hop in your Bargain Car Rentals ride and start exploring Northern Tasmania.

1.      House of Anvers

Chocoholics and sweet tooths should head to House of Anvers, a legendary Belgian-inspired chocolate shop just outside Devonport. Hand-made delights include the likes of truffles, fudge, waffles, and chilli hot chocolate. Take a peek inside the museum and exit via the gift shop for edible souvenirs.

2.      Spreyton Cider Co

The Apple Isle is famous for its cider, and few brewhouses make sparkling fruit-infused nectar as delicious as Spreyton Cider Co. Not only is the cider top-notch but the brewery’s luscious lawns and rustic interiors make for a pleasant setting to imbibe. Rock up on Sundays during summer for cruisy live tunes.

3.      Cradle Mountain

Australia’s most iconic alpine peak lies within day-tripping distance of Devonport. Scale its lofty summit or circumnavigate the base via one of many scenic hiking trails. Hardy adventures flock here to tackle the arduous 65km Overland Track.

4.      Sheffield

Tasmania is chock full of quaint country towns, and the tiny hamlet of Sheffield is among its prettiest. Pop into Mural Park to admire enormous vibrant artworks and visit Mount Roland Lookout for jaw-dropping views. Nearby Railton offers more quaint rural scenes plus killer suds at the Seven Sheds Brewery.

5.      Mount Roland Regional Reserve

Hardy hikers can tackle the steep ascent up Mount Roland, an imposing peak that towers over the lowlands below. If you don’t fancy a thigh-burning climb (and a knee-destroying descent), you can admire the big hill from O’Neills Creek Picnic Reserve instead.

6.      Mole Creek

Beyond Mount Roland lies Mole Creek, an adorable one-street town personifying Tasmania’s quaint rural charm. Stuff your stomach with a hearty meal at the Wandering Trout before heading out to Marakoopa and King Solomons Cave.

7.      Gunns Plains

Head west of Devonport towards the gorgeous Gunns Plains region for sweeping road trip vistas. Lush rolling hills, winding mountainous roads, and the gushing Leven River guarantee a scenic trip. Pop into the Gunns Plains Caves to see an underground river trickle through a million-year-old limestone cavern.

8.      Leven Canyon

South of Gunns Plains, Leven Canyon slices through rugged mountains in a slithering series of twists and turns. Adventurous hiking trails traverse the canyon floor, boulder-hopping and scrambling across challenging terrain. For a more accessible overview, head to one of the lookouts instead.

9.      Narawntapu National Park

To the east of Devonport, Narawntapu National Park is a sizeable coastal reserve home to a lively contingent of native wildlife. Picture-perfect hiking trails—try Archers Knob or Badger Head—wind through these coastal grasslands, and plenty of pretty campsites reside in the park.

10.  Launceston

Tasmania’s second biggest city is just an hour’s drive from Devonport, putting it within easy day-tripping distance. Explore Launceston’s eclectic museums and leafy parks before hiking the spectacular Cataract Gorge.

11.  West Tasmania

Devonport makes a great base to explore the wonders of West Tasmania. This sparely populated region is ripe for adventure, from Stanely to Strahan and Zeehan. Trowutta Arch and the Tarkine Drive make for an epic little road trip.

THE BEST TIME TO VISIT DEVONPORT

Like the rest of Tasmania, Devonport experiences the best weather in summer (December to February). However, the peak summer season also sees the thickest crowds, especially during the lengthy school holiday period.

The shoulder months of November and March offer pleasant weather without the crowds. A winter (June to August) Tasmania road trip means rugging up, blasting the hire car heater, and limiting your time outdoors.

TONY GILES
Bargain Car Rentals were terrific. Loved the Kia Carnival we booked. The contact Rep in Devonport was hard to get a hold of when we arrived and again when we dropped off the car, otherwise great service
Daniel Edward WILLIAMS
